Sodium is also involved in muscle contraction and the way that nerves signal to each other. We don't really have any good evidence that losing sodium from the body per se causes any issues with these things that result in muscle cramping. It's probably if there is any effective sodium it's more likely to be its interaction with water so the effect on osmolality.
