The Importance of Metabarpment
We use our inborn selfishness to develop metabarpment. We know what it's like to care for ourselves, we can't turn that off. But the sameness of self and others says, okay, I care for myself. There's no difference, others are the same. This is a basis for metang. So because we're so inborn selfish, Chantideva then comes with what he calls the biggest mystery. Other traditions call it the greatest exorcism. If you're into exorcism, you exercise the biggest demon, or you practice the biggest mystery - which is the exchange of self and other.
