Vitamin D Regulates Gene Expression
Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that regulates over a thousand different genes in the body. There are many different factors that regulate the ability of our bodies to produce and use vitamin D. As we age, the enzymes in the skin that convert 7 dehydro-cholesterol into vitamin D3 become less efficient as everything does with age. A 70 year old actually produces four times less vitamin D in their skin from the sun than their former 20 year old self. The gene that encodes for triptophan hydroxylase has a vitamin D response element in it.
