There's such a great deal of individual variation in the actual maximum heart rate and by extension there will then be variation in the 180 minus age formula you also have to remember that resting heart rate varies considerably. The mafertone formula is a generalized formula he's basically instead of saying 220 minus ages he's cut 40 beats out made it 180 minus age which should bring you down into some lower intensity but it will have the same problems that the max prediction will be as well.
