Anata - Selflessness, Ungovernableness
The Pali word Anata is usually translated as selflessness, but it also means understanding that things are ungovernable. As we begin to open to the painful or uncomfortable sensations in this way, we develop an insight into a very profound aspect of the teachings. It's very important practice for illness and death. In times of severe illness, times when we're dying, it's not a question of just changing position and the pain goes away. Things will be following their own laws, un governable. How will we be with it? Will we have trained ourselves in a situation like this with a mind? Can relax back, can open? Or will we be caught in fear?
