Recent evidence suggests that the site was never abandoned like we used to think. By about the early 800s you can see the targets that the Vikings have been hitting hardening which necessitates a higher level of coordination and larger attacks from the Vikings. This is why partly the 800s are going to be this period where the scale and the intensity and the amplitude of these attacks explodes in size.
