The Importance of History and Reception History in American Politics

There's an interesting way in which terms get introduced into culture reinterpreted redeployed and then there's a lot of equivocation people speaking past each other. It seems like not only do we have to contend with the very ideas to get put forth into the world but also how those ideas get reinterpreted sometimes to mean very different things than what they originally meant. So anyway yeah and then yeah and I would add just like as the last point to you, when something gets flagged as left wing or right wing it can get attacked and then people want to defend it  and then it just gets punted back and forth for some reason.

know no that's it's yes I think that there's an interesting way in which terms get introduced into culture reinterpreted redeployed and then there's a lot of equivocation people speaking past each other I think actually a lot of what's going on again around this issue you have some people defending what they think to be what the thing is other people attacking it based on what they think the thing to be is whether or not those actually accord to what the thing is but then what is the thing if not a lot you know sort of a collective agreement about what a thing is so the importance here of history and reception history is isn't isn't an interesting lesson because it seems like not only do we have to contend with the very ideas to get put forth into the world but also we have to contend with how those ideas get reinterpreted sometimes to mean very different things and what they originally meant and then having to navigate all those dynamics so anyway yeah and then

yeah and I would add just like as the last point to you and then in contemporary American polarization which I do think has gotten worse in certain respects there's a tendency of having anything become fodder for the culture wars in some abstract way even when based on survey data of the American population population people largely agree about huge numbers of issues more so than they have in the past they're much more likely to see the other side in demonizing ways and for that reason when something gets flagged as left wing or right wing it can get attacked and then people want to defend it or whatever and then it just gets punted back and forth and someone who's
