Joseph is a controversial figure in Hebrew history because he does not set himself apart as a Jew in Egypt. Unlike the Jewish people and other times of persecution, Joseph becomes Egyptian. And so here the archaic mythological cycle of violence is exposed. It's brought out into the sunlight and you realize that this is the way it operates upon the world.
