Stiffer is better, there might be one that's less stiffer is better. Plyometrics would be a place to start mind you with the caveat that plyometrics have to be done in a very controlled fashion. Even something if you wanted to start off on your own merely just getting a skipping rope and doing a little bit of skipping. Starting with some low level plyometrics sounds like one of the best returns on investment.
