The connection between our prefrontal cortex and our amygdala is temporarily severed. In order to reestablish that communication, the emotion itself has to come down. It doesn't have to go down to zero, but it does have to come down from like a 10. And then once you feel or sense that you're relatively calm or you're calmer, then you can start to work with the thought itself.
