The Importance of Sanctions
Punishment is mostly a waste of time, apart from two things. I think the most important reason for that is that detention rarely leads to change and improvement. The crucial thing is how and when you're offering the reward and the messages you're communicating through that. And in terms of what a reward should be, i it doesn't seem to matter, as long as students like it. But the evidence seems pretty clear that a specific but an unexpected reward is more powerful than hen expected.
