What Do I Not Yet Perceive?
Zen master dogan describes the relationship between our perception and reality in his essay genjo koon. He says that when we, for example, go out in a boat on a body of water far enough that we lose sight of land, we perceive the water as a circle. So to the creatures who live in the ocean, it is as vast and multidimensional as any landscape on the land. To a fish, it looks like a palace to a heaven, being a jewelled necklace. And beyond, there are innumerable aspects and characteristics we only see or grasp as far as the power of study and practice can see.
