A lot of people in America, as I understand it at the time, much more nigh do, thought that the British Empire was terrific. For American colonists, you wouldn't conflate monarchy with what Britain was doing to them in the 1760s and 1770s. They imagined that that looser form of government was quintessentially British. But by 1774, when pain arrives, two things have just happened. One is that this is no longer a fight about taxation. This is now a fight about liberty and rights.
