The History of Defense Research in the 1950s

Defense funding dominated several scientific fields including physics, electronics, aeronautics, and material science. About 80 percent of the federal R&D budget in the 1950s came directly from the Department of Defense. The University of California officially managed Los Alamos National Laboratory from the beginning of the Manhattan Project until 2006.
