Being embodied does help, but the nervous system responses are automatic. Our thoughts are so much slower and not accurate to what our body is feeling. Your respiratory system is the only system that you have control over. You can trick your brain back into a state of safety by just extending your exhales. If you come at them in sympathetic chances are you're going to trigger their sympathetic response.
