Counter Shade Can Be a Natural Sun Screen for Animals

Scientists don't really know why this pattern exists. One hypothesis is that it provides action against ultra violet light. Other scientists believe that counter shading can act as a universal camouflage. No matter where an animal lives, more light comes from above than below. Maybe it's an evolutionary attempt to counteract the natural effect of illumination.
