The Evolution of Self Pacing and Interval Training
The push rest strategy that many animals use is an evolutionary strategy to allow them to cover more ground faster. In humans, we need about two minutes to recover completely from a very intense bout of exercise before they can exert the same intensity again. The follow up to this was essentially: All right, what we want you to do now is do the same bout, push hard, but then we just want you to go ahead and start when you're ready.
