The Dualism of John's Community
In Matthew Mark and Luke, Jesus is constantly proclaiming an apocalyptic message. He says the age we live in now is controlled by the powers of evil but God's going to bring a good kingdom. What happens in John is that message disappears. It may be because John is living decades after all of that and it hasn't come. But what's interesting is that that dualism that you can sketch out on a horizontal timeline has been flipped on its axis.
