Yvonne's family came from a French-Canadian background. She says they were forced to work long hours in an uncomfortable, if not unsafe conditions. They became essentially industrial soldiers with no independent control over most of their waking hours. Yvonne: Their new life met their basic needs for food and shelter as well as their social needs. According to psychologist Abraham Maslow, however, our family members had yet to meet the two highest, most complex requirements in the hierarchy of needs.
