The Con of Identity Politics
In this book, Amarego starts with the view that this is all a con. So he's bought into the idea that the second kind of identity politics I've talked about. These people have ID cards, but they clearly can't vote. They're being coerced. Their votes are sort of being harvested. And so he lets slip at the end, actually, we didn't lose the election. It was almost like it doesn't matter. The civil society and the rule of law is pushing back slowly, clumsily. But I do have some hopes that we might get back to some point where the whole thing just sort of bloon gently deflates.
