The colon is home to a very large population of bacteria, which are also called the gut flora. There's more cells of bacteria in your colon than there are your own cells in your whole body. The importance of the gut flora has only really been appreciated, I think, in the last few decades. Even every year it seems there are new functions and important variations and aspects of that that's discovered.
