Carthaginian consul appius claudius was ordered to raise two legions and sail for sicily. He dispatched one of his cousins to secure passage for a smaller force on greek ships chartered from tarantum. The romans would eventually win this sloppily played game, but their victory would do nothing more than guarantee that another far bloodier conflict would be fought as soon as the two now mortal enemies were together.
