The best way to understand symbolism is that it's something like a contraction of reality. The word symbol itself means, you know, two things thrown together. All the symbols that attract our attention are because they seem to contract a lot of information and our experience into very simple forms. And that's why they end up being in some ways a shorthand of reality.
