How Much Did DePew Pay Dr. Thomas Schmalls-Reed?
As a member of DePew's surgeon's design team, Dr. Thomas Schmalls-Reed received a percentage of each ASR sold. He was just one of many influential doctors on the payroll. In 2007, without admitting to any wrongdoing, DePew paid $84 million to avoid criminal prosecution for allegedly conspiring to violate the federal anti-kickback statute. If that seems illegal, that's because it's supposed to be.
