People typically sort themselves into groups simply by choosing where to live. But there are many examples also of where third parties make these decisions for you and force you to sort yourself into or out of certain neighborhoods. Government laws, restrictive covenants in real estate deeds, home owners association veto powers and even the threat of violence by others can determine where you can live and where you can't. Soell points out that immigrants usually cluster when they arrive in a new country, oftentimes in ways that are not obvious to outsiders.
