The author's father was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 84. "I had this sudden anxiety that I'd never really tried to talk to my dad about anything I've learned from Buddhism," she says. The book is called advice not given because for a long time in her work as a therapist, he didn't want his patients to think they were proselytizing.

Mark Epstein is a psychiatrist in private practice in NYC and the author of many books about the intersection of Buddhism and psychotherapy.
