What Is the Core of a Game?

Games are abstract formal systems wrapped in some theme, he says. The central core of the game is just the rules, the abstract formal system. He puts across this idea of a game as a trellis, a kind of thing that a plant grows on. And people can grow beyond the trellis but that's really credit to them, not the Trellis itself.
