He left home possibly away from his parents' influence, but perhaps because he wanted to see the world. London was the center of his life on and off until he left for America. What was important was that he became an excise man in Lewis - a vibrant local coffeehouse society. And crucially is when he became part of a whole intellectual enlightenment society. He went to lectures, he met important people who would be very important in his future.
