Is the Experience Machine Really the Only Thing That Matters?

The most famous objection to the idea that subjective experiences are the only thing that matter is the experience machine thought experiment. Robert Nozick first published in his classic book, Anarchy State and Utopia, back in 1974. If pleasure and pain are the only things that are intrinsically valuable or dis-valuable, then if we had the option of living in a virtual world created by the experience machine than shouldn't we plug into it? Most people were going to say no, you shouldn't.
