The Importance of Self and Other
The old style hypothesis around the immune system was that it could distinguish self and other. So, pollen is tolerated by a healthy immune system, but not tolerated in allergy. And of course, what we eat is non-self - everything we put in our guts is non- Self. What's more useful is what's good for us, and what's not good for us.
