How I Knew to Knock on the Back Door
Alison Roman went to college in Santa Cruz and Los Angeles. She wanted to go to culinary school, but couldn't find a job so she knocked on the restaurant's back door. The chef gave her a job cutting marshmallows for 25 cents an hour. "I was so willing to do anything and work for no money that they never fired me," says Roman.
