Every animal, including humans, has a hard wired circuit that we were born with. The hypothalamic area called the arcuit nucleus regulates hunger and sotiety. And these nurons start getting active when we see food and think about food. They drive hunger in a way that's responsive to what the food looks like, what it smells, but also our prior history of interactions with that food. In fact, we could think about eating dis ders like bolemia as an unmasking of that mechanism.
