The biggest increases in dopomine are response to things that are positive and unexpected. Lesser dopomine is released when we anticipate something good will happen. Think about anticipating a great meal with friends. We so get some dopemin when the positive thing happens. But then if that thing doesn't happen, there's a drop in dopemine below our initial base line. That drop in dopemin is the chemical essence of what we call disappointment.
