The more the further back a block is in the chain, the rigid and static it is to resist retrogression. So when we make a leap forward with something, we have to make sure that we record it somehow so that we don't forget it. And this can happen in bitcoin as well, where you could have two blocks discovered simultaneously or perhaps a fork in the chain. Whereas the tip of the chain, which is trying to discover the solution to the mining algorithm puzzle will seal the current block.
