If you read modern parenting books, they'll always hard find praising effort, not ability. There's a dangerous undercurrent there as well, which is that you teach kids to value being smart. The idea of this natural innate thing means you don't have any control over it. If you stay in your comfort zone, you don't learn because you're not stretching.
