Psychologist Bob Chaldini has identified seven techniques of persuasion that nearly every human being is susceptible to. Social proof can be used for good, but it can also be used for evil. If I see evidence of authority voices speaking about a particular direction for me to take, it reduces my uncertainty that indeed this is probably the right thing to do.
