Is Machine Learning a Good Idea for Machine Learning?

With machine learning, it seems like making machine learning better is somehow very closely linked to intelligence. So at some point where the a i becomes good enough to help a bunch with building more a i, do you see fast progress before that? Do you see fass progress following that? Where the intelligence explosion would be following that? I think its a different question of whether you expect them to go very suddenly from kind of much slower to much faster. And so far that hasn't been terrifying. Perhaps then, you might say, and we've already seen the start of it, and it seems like it's a slow take off.
