Stress is actually the component that starts the cycle and keeps it going. When we go through a stressful situation where we perceive we are threatened, our cortisol levels go up. Our body can't maintain those high levels of cortisol after a certain point. It's actually toxic to the body to have them that high. And so things that trigger dopamine usually lower cortisol. So this is the beginnings of the why.
