After, say, the mid 1960s, highways were more likely to be sighted along things like rivers or old railroad lines. This suggests that perhaps later highways actually would have benefited from hicking routes where land assembly wasn't as much of a difficulty. So if anything, that just kind of like accentuates the result, that even despite the fact that highways are seemingly going through easier land routes, the cost of them is still sky rough.
