The History of the Albanian Bunker

About 70 to 100 people a year died constructing these bunkers. Each bunker costs the equivalent of a two-room apartment and could easily have resolved Albania's chronic housing shortage. They also took up loads of arable farmland while people were hungry. Like everywhere else in Europe, they were decommissioned pretty much in 1992. Although there's evidence that a lot of the bunkers were used again in the insurrection of 97 and in the cost of a war in 1999.
