Most of these coal operations that exerted so much social and political and economic control over the lives of the people in west virginia were owned by people who had never set foot in the state. Under traditional colonialism, west virginia had essentially been reduced to an economic colony of wall street and other out of state financiers and corporations. It really, really does resemble that system. Really, it comes to very much resemble, actually very much resemble the economic relationship between the corps and the periphery under colonialism.
