The Effect of Inflammation on Depression

One-third of depressed patients do not respond to antidepressant treatment, says Alessandra Balsini. In her lab she exposed brain cells and exposed them to inflammatory conditions so in a way she created depression in a dish. When omega-3 fatty acids were added, the inflammation reduced. This effect seems to be mediated by production of specific metabolites,. which are basically molecules produced by our body upon receiving Omega-3 fatty acid.
