CHAPTER

Is There Something Special About Animals?

Sally Kohn: Coursgaard sees animals as creatures who pursue a wide variety of distinctive ends and that's what they should be able to do. She says only humans are capable of complex ethical deliberation, which doesn't make us better but does mean we can be active citizens producing the results. Kohn: I think that is just much too simple because animals are very active in indicating what they need and what they want. They have marvelous, complicated ways of speaking, signaling some are language-like, some are just indicative of their preferences.
