In most situations, unless you're in an isolation tank, we're all filtering things out. Filtering takes a certain amount of mental energy. Our brains are incredibly good at filtering. And to a degree, we are being overwhelmed with the things we have to filter out and it's another factor for why a big part of what we need to do is narrow the amount of things we're exposed to.
