For a novice, it's better to look at what you have achieved. Look how far you've come past the mid point. And we should give novices positive feedback. With experts, people are more able to learn from constructive negative feedback. It is always hard to learn from negative feedback. There are many interventions that we design as a field to people with negative feedback. But it is much more possible when people feel committed, when they they feel like the expert.
University of Chicago professor Ayelet Fishbach has spent the last two decades studying the science of motivation. She has developed a framework for turning idle ambition into forward-moving action.
