The Different Types of Epithelial Cells
The stomach can vary greatly in size because one of its main purposes is to store food. But it's not just a storage sack, the stomach also continues the process of chemical and mechanical digestion which began in the mouth. The structure of the stomach follows that of the rest of the GI tract. So you've got your four layers that we've talked about. The innermost layer of the mucosa however has a specialized structure which consists of columnar epithelial cells. They have these hollow regions which are called gastric pits.
