Our brains are a continual dialogue between two or three little voices in our heads, you know. And if the voice in your head that you can have, it's mad. If your internal vice is excessively negative or excessively fearful, chances are mental health issues will arise from this external vice. So c b t aims to retrain that internal vice - not to be excessively negative, but instead for it to move to a place where it is rational and based in evidence and reality. It's like existential psychology: we can control what happens to us in life.
