The US copyright office says that AI-generated works generally do not qualify for copyright protection because there is no human authorship involved. The decision is currently being challenged in federal court, but as it stands, that's the rule. There is a slight loophole or exception that if a human adds something creative to an AI-generated work, that may be protectable. So a user of generative AI could in fact be liable for using copyrighted or otherwise protected materials.
