The Physiology of Acute Kidney Injury

The first part of your patient encounter is always to screen for stability. ABCs, GCS, and vital signs will guide you to ensuring or achieving stability prior to further assessment and management. More severe AKI could also include confusion, chest pain, or dyspnea which may be due to uremic encephalopathy or pericarditis. These are considered acute indications for hemodialysis.
