Many, many people struggle to admit their flaws and own the fact that behaviour of theirs caused other people's suffering or their own suffering. So it starts with taking responsibility and includes ampathy. And from there can talk about how you can go about making amends. The apology and the forgiveness are repair parts. Fred Luskin is the Director of the Stanford University Forgiveness Project, and has devoted much of his career to researching the way forgiveness affects our psychological, relational, and physical health.
